Pošip Sv. Ivan, produced by the Šain Marelić winery on Korčula, is a wine for all seasons by the sea. Inland, it is a perfect match for spring, summer and autumn. In the village of Čara, Dražen Šain and Stojan Marelić have specialized in this variety, the only one in Croatia with a known original vine. Legend has it that in 1864, a farmer from Smokvica named Barbaca (or Caparin) was clearing forest in the Stiniva Canyon when he stumbled upon a wild, naturally occurring vine. He was drawn to its fine aroma, exceptional flavor, and the unusual, elongated shape of its berries.
Barbaca cut several cuttings, transplanted them into his vineyard, and began propagating them. In 2008, the Municipality of Smokvica honored him for this with a commemorative plaque.
