At the Wine Museum in Mikulov Castle, located in the South Moravia wine region of the Czech Republic, they have explained why Capricorns (December 22 – January 19) should drink Blaufränkisch. The following sign, Aquarius (January 20 – February 18), also warrants attention. It is characterized by a desire for order in life, a trait shared by the Neuburger variety.
Calm and mysterious
It yields pleasant, everyday wines where no single element dominates. Yet, in the hands of a skilled winemaker, it becomes harmonious, full-bodied, and promising but remaining calm, much like an Aquarius. Pisces (February 19 – March 20) tend to be mysterious and quiet, living by intuition. Similarly, Sauvignon blanc conceals a wealth of aromas within its bouquet that invite discovery. They also share a desire for the best possible habitat, as well as the ability to thrive in harsh conditions.
The independence and dynamism of Aries (March 21 – April 19) can sometimes manifest as arrogance or impulsiveness, and St. Laurent is a wine with a strong character and a stubborn nature. It was named after Saint Lawrence, a martyr whom the Romans burned at the stake and then beheaded in 258 AD because he guarded the Holy Grail and refused to reveal its location.
Locked Horns
Taureans (April 20 – May 20) are also stubborn, so they are best suited to horned wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, a variety the French often blend with others to tame its intensity. Like those born under the sign of Taurus, this wine requires considerable time to reveal all its virtues. And there are many.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) make a good first impression, much like aromatic Traminer appeals to everyone the moment they smell it. Both people and the wine are best enjoyed in small doses. In excess, that charm can become tiring.
A Desire to Please
Cancers (June 21 – July 22) are sensitive and vulnerable, so it is no surprise they are likened to Pinot Noir, the most complex variety in both the vineyard and the cellar, yet one that produces the world's finest wines. Leos (July 23 – August 22) crave love, just like Chardonnay, a wine that wants everyone to love it. Both need time to fulfill their desire to be liked by everyone.
Virgos (August 23 – September 22) are hardworking and persistent in their pursuit of perfection, much like Rhine Riesling, the world's finest wine when given the time it needs. Libras (September 23 – October 22) are bold yet humble and possess an eye for true beauty, just like Graševina.
They love water
The variety was driven out of its native France, learning humility in the process, yet it was brave enough to conquer Central Europe. People born under the sign of Scorpio (October 23 – November 22) and Grüner Veltliner vines both love water and live, or grow, near it. Perhaps that is why sparkling water is so often added to a glass of Grüner Veltliner.
Scorpios are deep thinkers, prone to suspicion and jealousy. Similarly, Grüner Veltliner, that wonderful Austrian variety, seems to envy the success of others, driving it to produce the best wine possible. Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) looks far into the distance, aiming where to release the arrow.
Misunderstood
Blauer Portugieser with its name evokes distant Portugal, the land from which it originally arrived long ago. People born under the sign of Sagittarius are often misunderstood by others, just as many wine lovers fail to grasp the sheer pleasure Blauer Portugieser can offer.
