Back in 2010, at the international Chardonnay du Monde competition in Burgundy, Planeta won a gold medal, confirming that world-class wines can be produced from the world's most widely planted white grape variety even on a Mediterranean island. For generations, this winery has been blending Sicily’s diverse landscapes into a unique wine story, creating wines that faithfully reflect the character of the island and its terroirs.
Planeta wines are sold in Croatia by Miva Galerija Vina. To mark its 30th vintage, the winery has released a special edition featuring a redesigned label inspired by the artwork On Fire by the collective Claire Fontaine.
Every sixth bottle bears the special label
The flame motif symbolizes the spark of ambition that drove the creation of this great Sicilian Chardonnay, while also serving as a reminder of the increasingly frequent wildfires affecting the Mediterranean. It does not appear on every bottle, but rather on every sixth one, making it a unique symbol of the anniversary.
Exploring Planeta’s estates offers a glimpse into the diversity of Sicily. Each one represents a distinct landscape and a unique expression of the island. Located in the southwest, between Menfi and Sambuca di Sicilia, are the Ulmo and Dispensa estates, where wines such as La Segreta Bianco, La Segreta Rosso, Plumbago, Cometa, Terebinto, and Grillo are produced.
A global variety, a unique terroir
They are united by Mediterranean freshness, pronounced fruitiness, and elegance; the Didacus Chardonnay represents the pinnacle of the exploration into the terroir’s potential and stands as one of the most complex interpretations of the variety in Sicily.
The Santa Cecilia and Nocera Rosso wines are produced in the Noto area and on the Buonivini estate, located in the far southeast of the island. They express the unique character of the indigenous Nero d'Avola and Nocera varieties, the warmth of the Mediterranean climate, and the refinement of the terroir.
Cabernet Franc
The Didacus Rosso Cabernet Franc comes from the island's interior, specifically the Maroccoli estate, serving as further proof of the commitment to crafting great Sicilian wines.
Etna Bianco and Etna Rosso hail from the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna. Volcanic soils, high altitude, and a unique microclimate lend them minerality and elegance, qualities highly prized in modern winemaking.
They aren't cheap, but they are affordable
It is also worth noting that the prices are quite reasonable. These are not cheap wines, but they are affordable, at least when compared to those from other wineries renowned like Planeta.
